Not being familiar with the Big Apple she goes to the wrong address and begins to prepare for her audition by getting undressed. Well, she happens to be in the corporate offices of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., a millionaire who thinks she's a money grabbing prostitute and throws her out. 3 Stars - Drama - Shortly before WW I, James Mason in his last movie, plays the part of a wealthy Englishman, who invites some of his friends to his estate for a shooting party. Two of the guests partake in some friendly rivalry, while Mason's wife, played by Cheryl Campbell, hunts for a sexual encounter. John Gielgud has a part that can be best described as being an early example of an animal rights activist as he protests and rants against the senseless slaughter of pheasants for pure pleasure. Towards the end of the movie, a neighbor is accidently shot and killed by one of the participants, which leaves Mason in a state of shock. Item #OC0020

As he lays on what he believes to be his death bed, he sadly reminisces on his life and on the many misfortunes he experienced. In particular, his failed marraige to his first wife, played by Ava Gardner. At the end of the movie, he miraculously recovers, proclaims his love for Hayward, and vows to do meaningful work. She heads to Hollywood and lands a job at a celebrity party where she makes a more than favorable impression on a major star, played by Frederic March, who also happens to be an alcoholic. After the breakup, he returns to his home town determined to use his education by helping to organize miners and ease their plight. His father and brother are both killed in a cave-in. Sterling Hayden as the local Sheriff and his girl friend lives in the home with her son and father. Hayden is taken hostage while on a routine visit, along with the rest of the house occupants. Wayne Morris plays the part of an errand runner for Cagney because he's the only person who was ever nice to him. Jeanne Cagney is a down-on-her-luck streetwalker with a self-mocking sense of humor. All of the others have their owns quirks and follies, even William Bendix as the batrtender. Tom Powers has the antagonist role as a detective who treatens everyone. At the risk of exhausting all of his savings, he hires a noted attorney, played by Robert Donat, to defend his son. John Carradine plays the role of a man who is wrongly convicted and executed for a crime he didn't commit. Burgess Meredith as the son who fights to clear his father's name 15 years later. It is learned that evidence that would have proven his father's innocense was withheld at his trial. As a result the father's conviction is overturned and his name is cleared.
